Why are relationships so hard?

Relationships may be the most important and the most challenging thing we do, but we believe we’re supposed to navigate them without help. We’re not expected to become doctors, teachers or engineers without significant training. And neither should we be expected to be in long-term, satisfying relationships without help.

If you’re reading this, something likely isn’t right in your relationship. And if you’re like many of the couples I work with, something might have been off for a while now. If you’ve arrived at the point where you’re considering reaching out for help, then I honor the vulnerability and courage it takes to admit there’s a problem and reach out for support.

what does couples therapy with you look like?

I work from an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) perspective, which focusing on identifying your relationship’s toxic or unhealthy pattern, understanding each partner’s “hot spots” or triggers, and learning how to move closer to each other and be vulnerable, even in the face of anger or fear.

Another term for this type of work is “Attachment Theory,” which is a fancy way of saying that everyone needs to feel that their primary person in the world both gets you and isn’t going anywhere, even in the face of struggles.

I also utilize Non-Violent Communication (NVC), a method that helps each partner listen deeply and clearly express their thoughts, feelings and needs, and learn how to ask for what you need in your relationship.
